Watch the video answer »The truth is—there’s no one-size-fits-all number. At Dayloom, we believe in designing lighting systems that are not only beautiful but also built to last. We don’t measure success in short-term satisfaction—we build systems designed to last decades.Several factors influence cost: property size, landscape maturity, desired effects, and the level of design detail. However, we’ve learned that having a general framework can help homeowners plan more confidently.
Four Common Investment Tiers:
  1. $4,500–$9,500
Ideal for front or back lighting on many standard homes.
  2. $9,500–$17,500
Covers front and back for many homes in the DMV area or single sides of larger homes.
  3. $17,500–$43,000
For more mature landscapes, developed backyards, pools, and patio designs.
  4. $43,000 and up
Full-scale lighting for estate properties, established grounds, or commercial environments.
Industry Rules of Thumb:
  • 10% of your landscaping/hardscaping investment is a solid benchmark for lighting.
  • Landscape architects often recommend allocating 1% of your home’s value toward a lighting system.
We also include investment ranges on many of our project showcases so future clients can visualize what’s possible within their budget.

At Dayloom, one thing that sets us apart from virtually every other lighting design firm in the country is the product line we use—and helped build.

Over the past two decades, we saw a frustrating pattern in the lighting industry: most large manufacturers were producing luminaires that were expensive but simply not built to last. Their average lifespan? Five to ten years—if you were lucky.

That didn’t sit right with us.

So we took a different path. We founded Sterling Lighting in Danville, Virginia, with one clear mission: to design and manufacture landscape lighting products that could last a lifetime—and perform better than anything else on the market.

Every Sterling luminaire is designed in-house by Patrick Harders and his engineering team, drawing from over 25 years of real-world installation experience and more than 10,000 systems installed. The result is a line of precision-engineered products that are now trusted by many of the top lighting designers across North America and beyond.

In 2025, Sterling Lighting swept the top design awards in landscape lighting—including multiple LIT Design Awards—thanks to a commitment to performance, optics, durability, and user-centered design.

And because we work factory-direct, our clients benefit from award-winning products at pricing that often beats the national brands sold through traditional distribution. You’re not paying for markups—you’re paying for quality that endures.

How Did Sterling Lighting Get Its Start? | The Sterling Lighting Story

Yes—professional outdoor lighting can increase your property value, often significantly.

According to a study by the National Association of Realtors (NAR) and the National Association of Landscape Professionals, homes with well-designed landscape lighting can see a property value increase of up to 15%, especially when lighting is part of an overall landscape improvement plan. Outdoor lighting also ranks as one of the most desirable features for homebuyers seeking curb appeal and nighttime usability.

But it’s important to be clear: not all lighting systems add value.

A basic system that uses low-grade materials, lacks thoughtful design, or has been poorly installed can actually hurt resale potential. Buyers often see those systems as something that will need to be replaced or repaired—not a benefit. In contrast, a Dayloom lighting system is built to last decades, not just years.

We use award-winning luminaires from Sterling Lighting, paired with time-tested installation practices refined over more than 25 years and 10,000 systems installed. It’s this level of attention to detail that sets our work apart.

And when it comes time to sell? Dayloom warranties are fully transferable to the next homeowner after a complimentary field inspection—giving buyers peace of mind and protecting the long-term value of your investment.

A well-executed lighting system doesn’t just elevate your property—it elevates how people feel about your home, and that’s a value you can measure.

Absolutely. In fact, the Dayloom experience begins with the design process—not the installation.

You wouldn’t build a pool, renovate a kitchen, or redesign a patio without architectural drawings and documentation. We believe lighting deserves the same level of planning and professionalism.

Every Dayloom project includes detailed design documentation tailored to the specific property. This includes:

  • Lighting layout drawings showing fixture placement

  • Photometric calculations to ensure appropriate light levels

  • Light trespass analysis to avoid glare or spillover

  • Low-voltage wiring diagrams for safe and efficient installations

  • Control system integration documentation

  • Final as-built drawings for future upgrades or property work

We don’t believe in guesswork. Proper planning prevents poor performance, and that’s why we treat lighting design with the same rigor as any other architectural improvement.

Whether you’re working with a builder, landscape architect, or managing the project yourself, this level of documentation ensures clarity, precision, and long-term success. At Dayloom, we design lighting systems to elevate your space—and stand the test of time.

At Dayloom, we have one mission: to be the best at what we do. And we mean that literally. We specialize exclusively in landscape lighting—not pools, patios, irrigation, or general landscaping. That laser focus allows us to perfect our craft at every level: from design and product engineering to installation and long-term performance. Our founder, Patrick Harders, is one of only five lighting designers in North America to achieve Lighting Certified (LC) accreditation with a specialization in landscape lighting. That’s the highest level of certification in the industry—and it shows in every system we design.Over the past seven years, Dayloom has received 3 international LIT awards plus 8 North American AOLP awards, making us one of the most decorated firms in the country. But we didn’t stop at design. We also developed and manufacture the Sterling Lighting product line, recognized by professionals around the world as the gold standard in performance, durability, and serviceability. And here’s the part we’re most proud of: More Google reviews than any other landscape lighting company in Northern Virginia. Our reputation wasn’t bought. It was built—system by system, homeowner by homeowner. When you choose Dayloom, you’re choosing a team that’s fully invested in creating lighting that’s not just beautiful—but meaningful, lasting, and worthy of your home.https://youtu.be/kxFtj-xuMUU

At Dayloom, we believe outdoor lighting should make a home feel warm, inviting, and timeless—not like a theme park.Studies show that people feel most relaxed around soft, warm light—think candlelight or a campfire. That’s not accidental. Warm lighting helps us feel grounded, comfortable, and safe in a space. It’s why great residential lighting is about atmosphere, not just attention.Color-changing lighting certainly has its place—it draws the eye and creates drama—but it often works against the calm, sophisticated feeling most homeowners are trying to achieve. In most cases, it feels distracting, gimmicky, and out of place in residential environments. We’re not saying color has no role. It can be used sparingly as an accent—perhaps for a special event. But as a primary lighting strategy? It tends to clash with architectural elements and quickly feels dated. Our honest recommendation: leave color-changing systems to fast food restaurants and casinos. Your home deserves better.Let your lighting bring out the beauty of your landscape and architecture with subtlety, warmth, and elegance—the kind of lighting that makes people stop and take a breath.
